Painting at home is a convenient and inexpensive alternative to other options for the external decoration of buildings. Why do you need painting?
Houses of wood have been built for several centuries, but not so long ago to use paint to protect natural material from negative external influences. With such a task, not every paint will cope. There are a number of special compositions created for the use of outdoor and for contact with wood. This means that they are not afraid of direct sunlight and retain the color well for a long time, they do not let the water from precipitation, thereby removing the tree from rotting, protect against parasites and pests.
The usual layer of paint on top of the wooden wall performs a lot of important functions, the main of which are waterproofing, extension of the service life of wooden elements and an increase in the aesthetic content of the building as a whole. Like any natural material, wood is susceptible to aging. The rate of aging is affected by many factors, including ultraviolet, water, pests and bacteria.
Many do not understand how sunlight can harm the tree and speed up his decomposition. But if you pass over the wooden element for several weeks left in the sun (not in the shade), it will become gray, and the fibers will "climb out". Due to the dissipation of fibers and changes in their position, wood becomes more rough and delays moisture on itself (rain, snow, dew, fog). In addition to good protective characteristics of paint for painting a wooden house must have durability, otherwise updating the coating will have every year or once every 2 years. The durability of the coating affects not only the composition of the paint, but also the quality of surface preparation before it is applied. The service life on average ranges from 5 to 10 years. The most durable and qualitative are acrylic paints - they protect the wood for 10 years. In second place are alkyd paints and various antiseptics - 7 years. Oil paints on average hold 6 years. Antiseptics to protect the house
Antiseptic compositions are necessary to protect wood from bacteria, fungi, mold. They prevent rotting and decomposition, thereby extending the life of a wooden building. All antiseptics have a liquid consistency, which allows to increase the depth of their penetration from 4 to 7 mm.
In addition to protecting against mold, antiseptics reduce the negative effects of atmospheric effects and create a suitable surface for coating with transparent tinting compositions, for example, by a veneer. There are lesing and coating antiseptics. Experts recommend using lesing compositions, since they are completely transparent and retain the natural beauty of wood. The coating antiseptics are opaque (because of this name from the word "cover"), so they hide the wood texture, but at the same time they retain its relief. From here we can conclude that if you plan to cover the facade with a transparent varnish, you need a lustering antiseptic, and if you collect you to paint it into some color, you can use the coating.
Acrylic House Coating Paints
Acrylic paints have been popular thanks to the widest color palette, convenience in work and excellent performance. They are distinguished by enviable weather resistance, that is, protect the tree from moisture, the sun, light mechanical damage.
Important moment: For painting a wooden house inside and outside, various paints are needed. Inside there will be no such number of negative impacts, therefore, it is possible to use formulations with not so high protective characteristics. But here for painting the facade it is better to buy high-quality acrylic paint designed specifically for external work (make sure that the bank has an appropriate inscription).
An important advantage of all acrylic paints in their parpropuscular ability. Why are more and more people return to traditions and build houses from a tree, neglecting modern concrete materials? Because the tree "breathes", that is, it passes fresh air and removes spent, thereby providing permanent air micovemention. The wooden house is never too stuffy in contrast to concrete or block buildings. And if you "climb" wood outside with an airtight material, you can lose a very weighty advantage. The paint is very elastic, which allows it to cover even the most complex forms and not cracking due to the natural movement of wood (shrinkage of the new home, narrowing and expanding the wooden elements due to temperature differences). With acrylic, it is pleasant and convenient to work, because it almost does not smell, and when you get to the skin, it does not harm (it is enough to wash off the paint with water). For paint appliances, brushes, rollers, paintopults are used. Drying time is very short, and if necessary, the coating update can be carried out without removing the previous layer.
Latex paints for coating at home
Latex paints are generally considered one of the varieties of acrylic, but we decided to allocate them separately. If you go to the store, you will see that they are more expensive than ordinary acrylic facade paints, and the reason for this is higher quality. Latex paints are also called rubber, since they have high elasticity, and when applied, they form a dense and holling layer film, which firmly unlocked with wood and protects it from atmospheric influences.
The main advantage of such paint in its absolute environmentally friendly - even if it is not able to cause an allergic reaction to the skin. It is stable not only for the manifestations of nature (ultraviolet, rain, hail, hurricane wind gusts), but also to various household chemicals, so it can be washed with alkaline solutions without fears, while keeping the facade of the house clean.
Another point - after drying, latex paint is formed very pleasant to the touch texture. It fills up all small cracks and chips, so ideal for restoration of the house from the old, but not yet rotten wood. There are glossy and matte latex paints on sale, so it is better to take matte for facades, because the gloss will emphasize the smallest surface defects. Glossy paint will look good in the bathroom or kitchen on the perfectly smooth and smooth wall.
Oil paints for coating at home
Oil paints are distinguished by high weather resistance and have a good penetrating ability. It would be possible to say that they combine the qualities of acrylic compositions and antspetics, if it would not be a significant drawback - they dry very slowly. Drying time, depending on weather conditions, can stretch for a day and more. In the case of the facade, this is not very convenient, as the wind can raise dust and "stick" it to uncomfortable paint. The same applies to foliage, insects, etc.
In addition, over time, the oil paint flashes and loses its glossy shine, but if you want to use light shades, it will be almost unnoticed.
Alkyd paints for a wooden house
Alkyd paints were widely used during the Soviet times and so far many find them better in their field of application. But for the most part they do not lose popularity due to their low cost. For the facade, it will take a lot of paint, especially if the house is large, so if your repair budget is limited, you can purchase alkyd paint.
But before you go to the store, you should be aware of one characteristics - alkyd compositions are not too durable. They dry quickly and cannot penetrate the wood deep enough, and therefore they begin to peel out over time. And if the alkyd coating last 3-5 years, then latex - three times longer, and at cost will ultimately be about one amount.
Basically work on painting a wooden house by alkyd paints are carried out for window frames, door jambs, thresholds and other elements requiring increased protection against moisture and temperature differences. By the way, these compositions are able to withstand temperatures up to -30c.

Wooden House Painting Technology
Options for painting wooden houses depend mostly from the selected composition and state of the surface of the walls. In this chapter, we describe all the manipulations that should be made with the facade so that the paint lay down exactly, firmly and lasted as long as possible.
Useful advice: keep painting at home follows dry, but not too sunny weather, since the scorching rays will not allow paint to dry properly.
To work, you will need:

- instrument for paint (wide painting brush, roller or paintopult);

- primer or antiseptic;
- dye.
Useful advice: If you can paint the facade with a tassel or roller, just only a wide brush (roller), but also a narrow or round tassel for processing hard-to-reach places. If you have chosen to work the paintopult, note that the paint consumption for it is greater than in the case of a brush.
A few words about the primer. In general, almost all the paints are well connected with wood, and the primer is needed here more to enhance protection against moisture, rotting and better adhesion. With this task, the antiseptic will be perfectly cope with this task, but if it is possible, it is better to first treat the surface with an antiseptic, and then the primer. Useful advice: If you have seen an inexpensive agent that combines the advantages of antiseptic, primer and antipyrin, most likely it is a fake. If you want to protect the house "on full", it is better to buy all three means separately.
For the processing of the end parts, use water-based sealants - they reliably protect these most vulnerable places from moisture.
Progress:
- The quality of the preparatory work depends on how smoothly and beautiful will fall in the paint and how much it will last on the surface. That is why often the preparation of the wall occupies a much longer time than painting itself. First remove all irregularities with grinding or ordinary sandpaper.
- Clean the polished wall from the wood dust by a construction hairdryer.
- Remove all resin stains with a rag moistened in a solvent.
- Cockcline cracks and knots with a putty on a tree.
- After drying the putty, cover the walls by an antiseptic, and when it dries - with the flame. In order for the composition deeply penetrating in the wood, it will take several days.
- When the antiseptic dries (primer), you can start painting. It is more convenient to use the brush to work with the tree, even if it takes more time than when working with roller. The roller is suitable for smooth surfaces, and the paintopult does not protect the paint. It is best to start painting no later than 3 days after drying the primer. You will need to apply two layers (the second to apply only after the first frozen the first).
- Movement brush should occur along the board (along the fibers) so that there are no small non-cross-stratified areas and air bubbles have not been formed.
- Since the work of the brush takes quite a long time, periodically mix the paint, so that it does not be covered with a film. It will be better to cast a little paint in a separate container of general and pour as expenses.
