What to pay attention to when choosing an engine for a garden chopper:
- power up to 1.5 kW is enough to grind the branches with a thickness of up to 2 cm;
- more powerful engines in 3-4 kW are able to recycle branches with a diameter of about 4 cm and suitable for gardeners;
- the engine from 6 kW and more cope with thick branches of 10-15 cm, and they are recommended to choose to the owners of large farms and farms.
Since the homemade shredder in most cases is designed for various work, it is better to choose the "golden middle" - an electric motor in 4 kW or a gasoline analogue with a capacity of 5-6 horsepower.
Knives for chopper
The second important detail of the chopper is cutting elements or knives. The type and principle of operation of the mechanism, as well as the size of the recycled material depends on their design. So, a simple disk with knives will be chopped into the pipe only fragile branches, combined structures can recycle thick branches and give out the same small chips, there are such that the wood is crushed into a chip of 2-10 cm long. Unfortunately, the described models of the knives are almost impossible to make models, so for homemade devices their cutting elements were invented: a knife-disk design, a set of disk saws and a two-wheel system with 8 knives.

To make a shredder for wood, little only to buy the necessary spare parts, you need to have professional locksmith skills. The whole process takes place in three stages - creating drawing, preparation of materials and assembly of the device.

The main components of the mechanism we described above, but this is only a general view. The most important thing is to pay attention to when creating the drawing - the arrangement of the knives and the angle of their cut. So, the shafts will be between the plates, and each shaft will contain 3-4 knives. To fasten the cutting elements, it is better to use bolts, shifting them relative to the central part of the shaft. The shaft rotates freely thanks to 4 bearings that are fixed on the plates. The synchronicity of the motion of the shafts provide 2 gears that drive the motor. To pass a torque, use a belt or chain to choose from. Depending on the size of the knives and the diameter of the raw material, which you are going to grind, vary the gap between the shafts.
If you use an electric motor for 4 kW, its number of revolutions is 2500-2800 rpm. This indicator is good for a disk mechanism intended for thin branches and plants stems. The two-walled mechanism must be powerful, so the number of revolutions must be reduced.

Most of the materials needed to build the chopper can be purchased at the car market, the shop of agricultural machinery or in a construction store, but some details will have to be ordered or done on their own. To do this, you need to be able to work with a grinder and a welding machine.
Two-walled chopper
The work on the creation of a two-walled chopper consists of the following phases - assembly of the frame and the receiving compartment, creating a grinding drum with knives, installation of a drum and a motor.
Necessary materials:
- engine;

- gear - 2 pcs;
- pulley - 1 pc;
- shaft for knives - 2 pcs;
- bearings with fasteners - 5 pcs;
- knives;
- profile pipe;
- sheet metal (thickness 2 mm).
First of all, you should make a frame. To do this, cut from the profile pipe 4 parts: 2 - 40 cm, 2 - 80 cm. Welding machine Fix short parts between long at right angles so that the frame turns out. The distance between the two internal crossings should be such that the chopping drum can be in between them.

Assembling the mechanism:

- The knives themselves can be easily made from the Spring of KamAZ. Cut the desired springs, align it if necessary, heating in the mountain and hitting the hammer several times. Relieve the item and let cool.
- In the knives, make holes under the bolts.
- Sharpen the knives on the machine by choosing the cutting edge angle of 35-45 °.
- Attach knives to the shaft and tick the attachment points. Wrap the holes in the outlined points and make the threads in them.
- To make a chopping drum, take two plates - it will be walls. Cut the welding machine in them the holes for bearings and stare edges. If it is not possible to make this stage yourself, you can contact a plumbing workshop or an enterprise.
- Install the bearings inside.
- Bolts attach overlays on metal walls.
- Insert the shafts into the bearings and secure them.
- Connect the walls with rugged metal studs and secure them with nuts.
- It remains only to make the receiving chamber, through which the timber will get inside. To do this, take a sheet metal and 4 do the same workpiece in the form of a parallelepiped.
- Find the narrow side of each workpiece, departing from it by 5 cm and bend the edge.
- Bend the remaining three blanks to do in the opposite direction.
- Assemble the box and make sure the workpiece in close contact with each other.
- Connect self locking edge welding or rivets.
- At the bottom on the folded sides of the drill locations for the fasteners.
- Install all the assembled structure of the frame and secure it with screws.
- Put a motor and pull actuation member (belt or chain).
- In the last set and lock the receiver volume.
