Growing yukka in the garden
Most Yucca flower products are known as indoor plant, many-rudeness and whose varieties are now easy to purchase in any flower shop. I managed to buy yukki seeds, which as an open soil culture in Belarus is still rare.
Seeds (in the package of 6 pieces) landed dry into the usual purchase of a shot in early March. Before landing, a slightly shed its hot dark solution of manganese. Seeds decomposed horizontally, sprinkled with dry soil. The pot placed in a transparent polyethylene package and put in a light warm place near the window. The seedlings appeared very quickly, there were four of them.
The package soon removed, and the container with young shoots put on the windowsill. Seeders developed perfectly on a fairly cool windowsill. I did not dive them, because The volume of the pot for the development was enough. In early June, seedlings landed in an open soil for a sunny place in a sufficiently dense loyal soil. Only a few springs of sand added to the landing point.
Since Yukki is the nearest relatives of succulents (for example, agave), they do not like the organic, they prefer quite poor soils. It is better growing in dry places where atmospheric precipitates do not accumulate. In the first year, the seedlings developed quite slowly, in the second they gained power and strength, rose to about a meter altitude and the same diameter. On the third year, one of the seedlings bloomed.
It fell only once in the season in April, a dry complex fertilizer "Kemira" (approximately 50-60 g fertilizer climbed the plant around the plant).
Features of breeding
Yuks are intended cross-pollination. Flowers are opening at night and pollinates their little white butterfly from the genus Priusuba (Tehetikula).
In the case of my YUKKA, I can note that on a huge bloom (about 1 m long) after flowering there was not a single margin, because Their primordial pollinators - Coula we have no. And about artificial pollination (with the help of a brush, for example) learned late from special literature. Yucca bloom about three weeks. After flowering, it was not yet died, although they write about it in the literature, but gave several subsidiaries, which I transplanted in August to a new place. In the culture of Yukki, with the exception of the aloelic, due to the lack of pollinators do not fron.
For the winter, I will not inspire. The experience of one year showed that the shelter of the leaves of natural burlap, and then synthetic material leads to peating leaves. Natural burlap, alas, collects moisture and contributes to the development of mold pathogenic fungi in the event of warming. I admit that the insulation of a spruce sweetheart, synthetic bags (pre-leaves it is necessary to tie to the bundle in the "tail") of YUKKE does not prevent.
But necessarily in September around the plant laying out pieces of polyethylene film or synthetic packaging from the bags with fertilizers or from under sugar bags and pressed it with stones, bricks.
On the territory of the CIS countries, Yukku cultivated on the Black Sea coast of the Caucasus and the Crimea from 1816. Especially known to Yukka Nitchasty, Y. Slavnya, Y. Aloelic. The last three types of frost resistant and withstand temperatures up to -15 degrees. I was convinced that Y. Nutty can withstand lower temperatures.
Does not like excess moisture!
And not only in the fall. In the rainy summer, I would also recommend to lay the film under the plants and press it with a cargo in order to avoid getting the root system. All yukki, not excluding the nittens, - xerophytes, i.e. Prefer dry places of growth!
My cultivation experience in the conditions of the Minsk region showed that the yukka nitrate is well evolving without special and complex agrotechnical techniques. The plant does not like "fatty" soils, excessive feeding, and especially sensitive to excessive moisture. Even in the hottest last year, I did not watered my plants never! Perhaps this and "provoked" such a southern gorgeous flowering. It seems to me that it will be especially good to feel this plant on the sandy and soup soils of the Brest and Gomel regions in similar climate and the composition of the soil regions. But try to grow this plant yourself on my site I would recommend everyone! My experience was successful!
